I have had experience using Cortona in an MU environment ( Deep Matrix
EAI applet ) as well as Contact and Cosmoplayer.
In my opinion Cortona can't handle any substantial number of Avatars
from the very popular AvatarStudio software series, because those
avatars contain VisibilitySensors. A large number of constantly moving
VisibilitySensors presents problems for Cortona I think.
For better or worse I think it's safe to say AvatarStudio can claim
to be the unofficial standard for VRML avatars both for realism and
ease of construction, so you will probably wind up dealing with them.
I stress tested Cortona with the Deep Matrix EAI applet. It could handle
twenty five constanly moving avatars that hadn't any VisibilitySensors
comfortably. Contact could handle many more than that.
Cosmoplayer (as you can imagine) was inferior to both but
functional.
So to sum up yes, Cortona can be used in an MU role for say
online class rooms ( Bespace on vrmlworld's portal was designed
with Cortona in mind for education ) where the number of avatars
is both limited and do not contain VisibilitySensors.

I've had some experience of abstracting the html/javascript interface to contact & cortona and think cortona would make a good client for abnet. Could also detect the html browser and switch to using embed tag with cortona 5 so Firefox etc would work.
Can anyone see any problems with this ?
Is someone already doing it ?
I see there is a big chunk of heavy looking vrml which gets loaded from html into the vrml browser. Could anyone me if that needs some debugging for cortona.

I haven't forgot about this.
Our client for multuser world wants to move to an X3D solution so we have to move off Cortona for now.
We still think Cortona is king but I have to leave it until they implement X3D which they say is 'not in the near future'. |
